Explain how the police give the law meaning and give an example.
What will be an ideal response?
The police give the law meaning, because without an enforcement mechanism in place, violations of the law would go unpunished, and thus be effectively useless. Speeding laws serve as an example. If the speed limit is 70 miles per hr, but people know there are no police to enforce the law, people will drive faster than 70 because there is no fear of reprisal. On the other hand, if people know a police officer may ticket them for speeding, the law is more likely to be obeyed.
