The overload principle suggests that improvements occur by imposing new and higher training demands, however demands too great can result in overtraining, which is defined as the negative effects that can occur if an individual is too active or exercises too much. Insufficient, or a lack of, overload leads to detraining or a loss of health or physiological benefits that have resulted from regular exercise. The periodization principle refers to a systematic approach to altering program variables (for example, FITT), which decreases the chances of overtraining.
