The digestive tract wall has the same general structure throughout most of its length from the esophagus to the anus, with some local variations characteristic for each region. A cross section of the digestive tube reveals four major tissue layers. From the innermost layer outward, they are the mucosa, the submucosa, the muscularis externa, and the serosa.
