Following ergonomic principles, how will you advise your circulating nurse to set up the operating room?
You are the instrument nurse for a laparoscopic hemicolectomy and are organising equipment for the procedure.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Make use of the surgeon's preference card to ensure that all equipment is present. A room set-up diagram can be useful, so you would need to advise your circulating nurse to locate this as a guide, especially as you will be scrubbed when equipment is moved into place following commencement of the procedure. Positioning of individual equipment is important: all team members should be able to access and view video screens and monitors. It is also important from a work, health and safety perspective to ensure that electrical cords are off the floor and pendants are used to attach equipment where possible. If the surgeon or anaesthetist cannot view the monitoring devices clearly or if nurses cannot quickly access equipment controls to change settings, patient safety may be compromised (ElBardissi & Sundt, 2012).
During the procedure, you hear the surgeon comment to her assistant that the patient seems to be bleeding more than she would have anticipated.
