Provide an example of an experience in which the hypothalamus would be utilized. Include at least three of the primary functions of the hypothalamus.
What will be an ideal response?
The hypothalamus is involved in the control of the pituitary, the sympathetic division of the ANS, and motivated behaviors including feeding, fighting, fleeing, and mating. Therefore, a situation that might hit on at least three of these aspects would be someone who just finished eating a sandwich (motivated behavior of eating) who encounters a scary situation, like a rabid dog. The hypothalamus will promote either flight or fight in this situation, readying available energy to combat the situation.
