What is genetic diversity? Why is it important to maintain genetic diversity?

What will be an ideal response?

The best responses will include discussions of the following ideas: Lack of genetic diversity can have devastating effects on populations. An example is the cheetah. Because of a population bottleneck, the cheetah species has very little genetic variation. Because of this, uniformity, the population may be very susceptible to infection. Thoughtful answers will discuss the need to preserve as much genetic diversity as possible to preserve the species existing today and for the benefit of mankind in terms of medicinal and other products and knowledge that can be gained from these diverse species.
