Describe the impact that gay and lesbian parents have on the children they raise.

What will be an ideal response?

Gay and lesbian families are diverse along dimensions of race, social class, and gender. In some, the children were born to one of the partners in a previous heterosexual relationship. In others, the children were adopted or, in the case of lesbian couples, born by means of artificial insemination. Some are single-parent families, with, for example, a lesbian mother rearing her children from a previous heterosexual marriage. Concerns have been raised about the children in these families regarding whether the children themselves will turn out to be gay or lesbian, whether they will be less psychologically healthy than children raised in heterosexual environments, and whether they will face difficulties in their relationships with peers because of their unusual family background. Research has shown the most children raised in lesbian or gay families have heterosexual orientations and their psychological and social adjustments are similar to those of children raised in heterosexual families.
