What does it mean that living things are part of populations that evolve? Provide an example of evolution

What will be an ideal response?

Populations do not remain constant from one generation to the next, but change over time, across generations. During the industrial revolution, when habitats became polluted and blackened with soot, peppered moth populations evolved so that better-camouflaged dark moths became more common than light moths. Once anti-pollution laws were passed and habitats cleaned up, light moths again became more prevalent. (Other examples of evolution are, of course, possible).
