Why has the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) been a key piece of legislation for IPV? How has VAWA helped protect victims of IVP? Where does the VAMA fall short in helping protect victims?

What will be an ideal response?

VAWA signaled that domestic violence was finally being taken seriously on a national scale. It has enhanced federal domestic violence and stalking penalties, added protections for abused foreign nationals, and newly developed programs for elderly and disabled women. It has enhanced legislation for repeat stalking offenders, added additional protections for battered and/or trafficked foreign nationals, created programs for sexual assault victims and American Indian victims of domestic violence and related crimes, and created programs designed to improve the public health response to domestic violence. This key legislation addressing IPV has improved criminal codes and statutes that protect victims. Millions of people are still affected each year and remain in vulnerable situations.
