Although Charlemagne founded the school for his nobility at Aachen, Alcuin was able to refine the system of education by measures such as reestablishing the trivium and quadrivium, or seven liberal arts (grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy), which had fallen out of practice earlier. He corrected mistakes in hand-copied Bibles in Latin (the Vulgate) and initiated a program and a center for copying of texts. All of these actions helped to ensure the transmission of late classical education in the medieval era.
