Automation can be traced back to the beginning of the industrial revolution. One popular example is the introduction of Joseph Marie Jacquard’s automated weaving looms into the English textile industry,
which led to protest by the so-called Luddites. Other examples include mass production of ships in Venice and Portsmouth using premanufactured parts and assembly lines, publishing using the early printing press, and assembly of guns at the Springfi eld Armory during the American Civil War using interchangeable parts.
