Suppose you are at the edge of a cliff and you throw one ball downward and another upward at the same speed. Which will hit the ground faster? Does it make a difference in which direction the ball is thrown? Explain

What will be an ideal response?

In terms of conservation of energy, no matter which direction a ball goes when thrown, if its speed is the same, then its initial kinetic energy is the same. If the balls are thrown from the same height, this means that their initial potential energy is the same, so their total energy is the same for all directions, all of which is converted to kinetic energy when the balls hit the ground below. This means the balls will have the same speed in all cases.
