What are the purposes that survey research serves?

What will be an ideal response?

Survey is extensively used inside and outside the scientific community for different purposes. Social scientists, including health services researchers, primarily use surveys to describe a population of interest by showing the distribution of certain characteristics, attitudes, opinions, feelings, or experiences within a population. Survey research methodology is widely used for researchers to follow stringent guidelines and attain meaningful insights. Survey research may also be used to examine the causal relationships among variables.

Outside the scientific community, survey is widely used in both the public and private sectors. The federal government conducts or sponsors major surveys every year for the purpose of gathering information, planning, and informing decision making. The news media conduct opinion polls to gauge public reactions to important events, policies, programs, and political candidates. Businesses conduct surveys to test-market new products and services, assess consumer satisfaction with current products and services, and compile consumer profiles.
