The uterus is a muscular organ in the shape of a pear that connects to a fallopian tube, one each side. Three layers comprise the uterine walls: the perimetrium which is the most outer part, the myometrium which is the muscular middle layer and the endometrium which is the inner most layer, into which a fertilized ovum will implant. The fallopian tubes are about 7-14 cm long and made out of very fine tissue. The end of each tube is a fringe of tissue called the fimbria that sweeps over the ovaries during ovulation in order to pick up the ovulated ovum and, with the help of tail-like projections inside the fallopian walls, guide the ovum down to the uterus.
