How does the United States compare with other countries in terms of social policies that support families and how could our government modify its policies in order to benefit diverse family forms?

What will be an ideal response?

The United States lags behind many other developed countries in terms of social policy. France confers the same rights on partners in civil unions as on married couples. In Sweden, Iceland, and Norway, there are generous leave policies that support fathers in addition to mothers.
The United States adheres to principles of individual opportunity in the policy-making arena. This approach stresses policies aimed at providing chances to succeed or fail in the labor market, not universal supports for every family. Policies that reflect egalitarian or familistic principles would be an improvement over existing support programs. The United States needs family policies that reaffirm classic American values, such as equal opportunity, tolerance of diversity, and individual responsibility, put in the context of collective support for the diverse needs of new family arrangements.
