Schein referred to one of the levels of cultural diagnoses as “espoused beliefs and values. Describe what he meant and why it is useful.
What will be an ideal response?
Organizational members, particularly at the executive level, can recite beliefs and values of the organization but rarely behave consistently with those statements. The espoused words become limited in helping to fully understand the organization’s culture. This level and its understanding can be useful for helping to describe the organizational members’ intention, but if actions do not match the espoused beliefs and values, some important ingredient of the culture is unavailable. It may be below the conscious, overt level of artifacts. It may lead to an understanding of basic underlying assumptions.
