Active immunity is achieved when a person's own immune system responds to a foreign substance. An antigen-specific antibody is produced during the initial invasion, and if the infection is survived, this response can be elicited on future invasions with the same or similar organisms. Immunity against that organism usually lasts for many years or sometimes even a lifetime and is considered permanent immunity. There are two basic mechanisms to obtain active immunity: when a person becomes infected with the organism and when a person is immunized.
