Discuss the environmental degradation and poverty that is prevalent in Haiti. Be certain to emphasize the historical factors that have led to this situation in the country
What will be an ideal response?
Haiti was once the jewel in the crown of France's colonies; today, Haiti is the poorest country of the western hemisphere. Erosion, and deforestation are some of Haiti's serious environmental issues. These environmental problems result from an impoverished population over farming fragile soils and because of a need for wood as fuel. Haiti's colonial legacy, corrupt governments, and the U.S. government have all had a history in perpetuating Haiti's inequality. Haiti has few forests remaining, and the environmental damage to the country has made it difficult for the country to find its economic footing. As a result, it is an impoverished state.
