Which of Maslow’s needs were fulfilled for Patrick? Which were not? Did the fulfillment of these needs change at any time in Patrick’s life? Could Patrick be perceived as self-actualized according to Maslow’s theory? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
Physiological needs were met throughout life but safety needs were not met in childhood because of his father beating his mother. Love needs were probably met in childhood although it is unclear in the case study. In adulthood they were met because he was popular and eventually married his high school sweetheart. Esteem needs may not have been met in childhood because he was afraid he could not live up to his father’s expectations and because he was not doing well in school, initially. Later he did better in school, which should have boosted his self-esteem, but in college he again had trouble. Even in adulthood he wondered if his success was due to his father helping him. It isn’t until he asks his father whether he earned his law positions on his own, and his father replies in the affirmative, that Patrick feels confident in his abilities. His reputation needs were met in high school and adulthood because he was a good athlete and was able to get prestigious positions, respectively. He most likely is actualized in adulthood because he is interested in religion and involved in his church. He also describes his children as beautiful and wonderful, all of which suggest B values.
