Explain why it is important to replenish minerals (electrolytes) as well as water when the body is perspiring profusely. Include at least three ways electrolytes can be replaced

What will be an ideal response?

Excessive fluid loss, perhaps through sweating, diarrhea, or high urine output, can result in dehydration and loss of minerals. If fluids are replaced by drinking only plain water, then body fluids will become more dilute. This dilution attracts Na+ in the blood, and Na+ moves from the blood into interstitial fluid, then into the cells. Through osmosis, water follows the Na+ and enters the cells as well, causing them to swell dangerously. This can lead to a condition called water intoxication, which is characterized by convulsions, coma, and, possibly, death. To prevent this, electrolytes should always also be replaced when drinking fluids to rehydrate.
Electrolytes can be replaced in several ways. One of the simplest is to take in a small amount of salt when drinking fluids. Another way is through the use of commercial electrolyte packets that can be purchased and added to drinking water. A third way is drinking commercial beverages that already have electrolytes in them; there are many of these currently on the market. Yet another way is through eating fruits and vegetables that have varying amounts of minerals in them. For example, bananas are high in K+, which is why they are often offered to those participating in sports events, such as walks to raise money for charities and triathlons.
