Is immigration a positive or negative force in the U.S. economy? Please explain your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Students should discuss that immigrants--legal and undocumented--continue to find work and niches in American society in which they can survive. The highly skilled immigrants fill gaps in the primary labor market and in schools and universities, corporations, hospitals, and hundreds of other sectors of the economy. Less-skilled immigrants provide cheap labor for the low-wage secondary job market; frequently, the primary beneficiaries of this long-established system are not the immigrants (although they are often grateful for the opportunities) but employers, who benefit from a cheaper, more easily exploited workforce, and American consumers, who benefit from a cheaper, more easily exploited workforce, and American consumers, who benefit from lower prices in the marketplace and reap the benefits virtually every time they go shopping, have a meal in a restaurant, pay for home repairs or maintenance, or place a loved one in a nursing home.
