Discuss the positive and negative effects of bariatric surgery

Advantages of gastric bypass surgery include 50-60% excess body weight loss (with long-term maintenance) and dramatic improvements in health status leading to longer life. Negative aspects include a 0.5-1.1% death risk, 22% risk of post-surgical complications, and 40% risk of long-term complications, plus a necessity to adhere to a lifelong special diet and supplementation because of the effects on absorption. Advantages of lap band surgery include ~48% loss of excess weight, fewer complications than with bypass, and reversibility.
