Chronological organization patterns are arranged in a time-order sequence based on the time that events occurred. For example, if I was speaking about Susan B. Anthony's life, I could arrange my main points starting at her birth and moving through her life.
Main Point 1: Her birth and formative years (1820–1840)
Main Point 2: Her fight to end slavery (1840–1860)
Main Point 3: Her fight for women's rights (1860–her death in 1902)
Topical organization patterns are arranged by main points or topics and presented in the order that seems most suitable. For example, if I was informing my audience about skin care, I might use the following topical organization pattern:
Main Point 1: What is skin cancer?
Main Point 2: Who is most at risk for skin cancer?
Main Point 3: How can cancer be prevented?
Spatial organization patterns arrange main points based on physical location. If I presented a speech on Ellis Island and how immigrants physically moved through the immigration process, I would organize my speech as follows:
Main Point 1: The Baggage Room
Main Point 2: The Registry Room
Main Point 3: The Hearing Room
Main Point 4: The Bunk Room
Problem-solution organizational patterns are arranged by first presenting various aspects of a concern/problem and then proposing actions to address the problem discussed. If I was speaking about the legalization of gay marriage, I could use the following problem-solution format:
Main Point 1: Lack of health benefits for gay couples
Main Point 2: Hospital visitation problems
Main Point 3: Inheritance problems
Main Point 4: Benefits and advantages of legalizing gay marriage
A cause-effect organization pattern establishes a relationship among events in order to justify a certain conclusion or course of action. So if I was speaking about global warming, I might arrange my points in a cause-effect pattern as follows:
Main Point 1: Causes (technology, energy consumption, and overpopulation)
Main Point 2: Effects (higher temperatures, rising sea levels, and melting ice caps)
Main Point 3: Slowing global warming
