One thousand adults were seen by nurse practitioners in the emergency department of hospital X. You have been asked to send a patient satisfaction questionnaire to this group, and have been advised that a sample of 200 patients is adequate. How would you go about selecting a simple random sample from the group of 1000?
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWERS To select a sample of 200 patients from a population of 1000, the sampling interval is: k = 1000/200 = 5. Every fifth patient on the list would be sampled and included in the sample; that is, sent a questionnaire. To obtain a starting point select any number between 200 and 1000, say 420. In this case, if the first number is 420, the patients corresponding to 425, 430, 435, 440 and so on, would be included in the sample of 200.
