What is a perched water table, and what causes it?

A perched water table is an accumulation of groundwater above an aquiclude that lies above the regional water table. It can occur where a shallow aquiclude is present above an aquifer containing the zone of saturation. Local infiltration is prevented from reaching the regional water table, pooling instead above the shallow aquiclude.
