Answers will vary. Durkheim believed that all religions share the same social characteristics, the same basic social purposes, and the same origin in human social development. According to Durkheim, “they respond to the same needs, they play the same role, they depend on the same causes.” It also follows that so-called primitive religions are thus “no less respectable” than so-called advanced or modern religions and also that religion itself, as the face of society, is indeed a very special, sacred thing.
