Compare Thomas Jefferson's stated political beliefs with his actions as president
What will be an ideal response?
Many will note a number of contradictions. Jefferson was a firm believer in limiting the role of the federal government, but he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, pushed Congress to enact the embargo with Britain, and engaged in several clashes with John Marshall regarding the power of the president. Better students will also note that Jefferson lived up to some of his promises, including drastically cutting the size of the federal government, though this also allowed him to move many Federalists out of government positions. Push the students to explain how Jefferson reconciled his actions with his individual philosophy.
