If you have ever had a chance to witness a childbirth, then you know it is an amazing event. However, even after the baby has been removed from the mother, her work is not complete in terms of labor. Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Childbirth has three distinct stages, with the dilation and expulsion stages being dedicated to delivery of the infant from the womb to the outside world. The final stage involves removal of the placenta, a large structure that helped sustain the baby during the entire pregnancy. Until the placenta is moved out of the uterus, the mother's blood supply is still open to the outside because the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta and the amniotic membrane was ruptured during either the dilation or expulsion stages.
