Spiritual beliefs may help older persons find greater meaning of life which tend to diminish the impact of challenges. Participation in regular religious activities has been associated with better physical and mental health. Participation with a faith community may mitigate social isolation. Forms of spiritual and religious expression, such as mediation and prayer are thought to buffer the impact of challenges such as illness, retirement and widowhood. Religions can provide a cognitive framework that accept painful event over the life course.
As a social worker encourage the person to incorporate the beliefs he/she has as a source of strength and inclusion with other interventions.
The ethical dilemma is one of preserving the person’s self-determination vs. best interests. The social worker could work with the person to insure he/she understands the options and the consequences of one option over the other.
