How does egoism sync with the philosophies of Adam Smith and Ayn Rand?

Egoism is at the heart of both Adam Smith’s and Ayn Rand’s theories with some
slight differences between each. Both philosophers believed that egoism is a natural--and noble--characteristic of the human condition and that under the right circumstances, pursuit of self-benefit will result in greater happiness and societal welfare for all, or almost all. Adam Smith didn’t believe that pursuing self-interest meant that a person was selfish, only that it was natural to take into account one’s own welfare. Rand takes a more absolutist view, arguing that people should pursue self-interest at all costs without concern for common welfare and abhorring governments that seek to promote common welfare. Even so, she believed that this relentless pursuit of egoistic self-interest would improve overall society.
