Explain how the amount of available soil nitrogen is related to the differences
in cultivation practices among the sites.
What will be an ideal response?
Because many leguminous plants used as crop plants are nitrogen-fixers, the
bacteria associated with the roots of these plants would be actively engaged in
fixing atmospheric nitrogen and adding it to the soil. Animal fecal material and
urine are also high in nitrogen; not unless the pasture contained a large number of
animals with an active soil microflora, most of the nitrogen would be in the "green"
dung and not in the soil.
