Describe that Villegas (1991) meant when she said that language is the strongest cultural element that shows up in a classroom.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: Of all the different aspects and elements of the classroom, language is the strongest cultural element (Villegas, 1991). It is important then to understand the relationship. In some cultures, girls are taught to defer to boys when it comes to communication. Children may be taught to be quiet in the presence of adults or taught not to question or challenge adults. These practices can create not only conflicts in the classroom but also personal conflict with the student. A teacher may challenge a student in a critical-thinking context, not understanding the cultural taboos against students speaking back. Children can become confused about their cultural identity and struggle to maintain a balance between family traditions and the culture of the American classroom. With these thoughts in mind, we must consider the interplay of language and culture.
