What are the stages of spelling? Why is it important to know the stages of spelling when assessing struggling readers and writers?

What will be an ideal response?

The stages of spelling are as follows:
• Prephonemic: May use letterlike forms or even real letters, but they don't represent sounds.
• Alphabetic. Letters represent sounds, but students might spell a word with just one or two letters. May spell sound with just one letter even through they are correctly spelled with two letters: FET for feet, for instance.
• Word pattern: Learns that there is not always just one letter used to spell one sound. Uses visual features in addition to sounds. Uses digraphs (goat) and final e (hope) to spell long vowels.
• Syllabic: Spells multisyllabic words. Learns to drop final e (hoping) and double final consonant (hopping) when called for.
• Morphemic: Learns that meaning is used to help spell words. The g in sign is retained even though it does not represent a sound because it is sounded in signal and signature.
