The deprivation model suggests that the inmate subculture and its accompanying inmate code is the result of various deprivations that inmates suffer because of their imprisonment
What are some of those deprivations and is it possible to avoid some of them in order to provide a more normal environment? With a more normal environment, would some of the negative consequences of the inmate subculture be avoided?
The deprivations include loss of liberty, autonomy, security, sexual relationships, and goods and services. Suggestions for how some might be avoided could include allowing conjugal visits, providing opportunities for a broader range of goods and services, and allowing greater autonomy. Issues of liberty and security are not so easily modified in the prison environment. Whether or not a more normal environment can lessen negative consequences of the inmate subculture will depend on the person's views on how "normal" the inmate's home environment might be and on views about retribution (i.e., prison should deprive) versus rehabilitation (i.e., successful reentry is enabled by a more normal prison stay).
