Why is it important to understand the demographic information about American Indians and Alaska Natives?
What will be an ideal response?
Many clinicians may have had little contact with members of this population; therefore, it is important to provide baseline data so that they can begin to understand who these people are. Clinicians are likely to see American Indians from the 10 states that most reside in (i.e., California, Oklahoma, Arizona, Texas, New York, New Mexico, Washington, North Carolina, Florida, and Michigan). Most American Indians live in urban areas rather than on reservations. Further, many American Indians living in urban areas have a mixed ethnic/racial heritage, with either White or Black combinations.
