What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? Why is satiating each of these needs important?
What will be an ideal response?
As a minimum the student should list all categories, in correct order, and adequately describe the key components of each category (our experience is that students sometimes have trouble distinguishing between esteem and self-actualization needs). The good student will describe why meeting each set of needs is important, the better student will show that sometimes we might forgo lower order needs and that this might be a weakness with Maslow’s model, but ultimately these lower order needs make it easier for us to pursue our higher order needs. A superior answer might integrate Maslow’s notion of Eupsychian management but this is not a mandatory requirement.
