There is a lot of room for water molecules in and among the particles of the muds. When applied, the combination of mud particles and water forms a covering that acts as an insulator on the body, trapping heat and keeping it from radiating away and keeping water from evaporating from the body. Thus, muds are excellent warming treatments and hydrating treatments. The trapped heat also serves to increase local blood circulation. The suspended particles of mud are of various sizes and textures, and they can have an abrasive quality. This makes them useful for exfoliation, which also stimulates superficial blood circulation.
Overall, muds are used therapeutically to help relieve pain in muscles and joints, and pain from tendinitis, muscle strain, joint injuries such as sprains, noninflammatory stages of arthritis and bursitis, and to soothe certain skin conditions.
