What is an ultra-large containerships?
Ultra-large containerships (ULCS) have capacity of 18,000 or more TEUs. They dwarf what were considered the 10,000 TEU megaships of a decade. ULCS offer unparalleled carrying capacity but they come with some challenges. First, only a few ports can handle ships of this length and draught, limiting the potential routes. Second, the added amount of time required to load/offload containers can create port congestion. Finally, success is dependent on high load factors. If China's export activity wanes, it will be difficult to profitably operate these ULCS.
