Contrast stock dividends and stock splits
Stock dividends involve the issuance of additional shares of stock. The dividend normally reflects the fair market value of the additional shares. A stock split is similar to a stock dividend except that stock splits reduce the par value per share of the stock. No accounting transaction is necessary for a stock split.
