Compare and contrast the three general research methods (experiments, surveys, and participant observation and interviewing).
What will be an ideal response?
Experiments are strongest for testing nomothetic causal hypotheses and ensure causal validity, not generalizability. Surveys using statistical controls can strengthen causal arguments, and if a random sample with a high response rate is achieved then the results can be generalized. Assessing measurement validity is often not possible with participant observation and intensive interviewing (measurement reliability is also low), but a deeper understanding of the concepts being measured can often be achieved.
