During the summer of 2010, very large forest fires occurred in western Russia. At one point, the cloud of smoke spread over 1000 miles (approximately 1600 km), enveloping a number of cities. The smoke was thicker than any you would see in a tobacco
store! Based on the information in this chapter alone, why do you think the daily death rate due to heart disease in Moscow doubled during that time?
What will be an ideal response?
The smoke plumes may have contained some carbon monoxide, which is one of the more harmful components of cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide lowers the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells, so all organs, including the heart, receive less oxygen. The stress that carbon monoxide places on the heart could account for much of the effect. (Russian health officials stated at the time that the amount of smoke from the fires was equivalent to what a person would inhale from smoking eight packs of cigarettes a day!)

The graph above displays results from subjects in a study who responded to a questionnaire on character and temperament. The subjects had a known genotype for the DRD4 gene (associated with novelty-seeking behavior). Results are shown for the CC group and the CT and TT genotypes as another group. In the graph, what do the light blue bars represent?
