Explain the importance of the air barrier of a house, how air sealing contributes to air tightness of a house, and the proper role of electric boxes that interact with the air barrier.
What will be an ideal response?
The air barrier of a house is one of the most important elements of the energy efficiency of a Green home. It blocks air from moving between the inside of the house and the outside and holds the conditioned (heated or cooled) air in the house. The air tightness of a house is achieved through meticulous air sealing at all penetrations that go from inside the house to the outside through the air barrier. Electric boxes that penetrate the air barrier should be special airtight models, used for switches, receptacles, lights, paddle fans or other fixtures mounted in exterior walls, floors with a basement, or crawl space beneath or ceilings with attic above.
