Student researchers want to conduct an experiment on the general population. They step outside their classroom and interview 25 people – mostly students – asking three questions to collect data for their experiment. Explain the flaws in this design specific to generalizability and random sampling. How can they improve for the next attempt?
What will be an ideal response?
May vary. Because the researchers only focused on college students, the findings
will not be applicable to a general population. In addition, they used a convenience
sample of those nearest their classroom when they were more interested in a
population sample. This could be improved by ensuring that subjects are truly
representative of the general population by going beyond a convenience sample.
