Discuss five different ways that students can find out more about career opportunities within the field of psychology and the sequence of courses required
What will be an ideal response?
Answer will include any five of these six suggestions: (1) Students can utilize their psychology textbook by looking at the table of contents. In chapter one of Psychology, A Journey, 5th Edition, students can look back at the table of psychology specialty areas and at the pie charts that illustrate where psychologists work and what they do at work. (2) Another way to get a sense of the diversity of psychologists' interests is to browse the American Psychological Association's list of more than 50 specialized divisions, and their associated websites.(3) Another area of help is at your college. Students should consult with their psychology professor and at the career counseling center. (4) Students should attend the psychology department's activities, such as the colloquia, which involves presentations by guest speakers, often from other universities. In addition, students should try to get connected with senior psychology students, whose experience can be invaluable. (5) Students can also become a student member of national psychology organizations, such as the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, or the Canadian Psychological Association. (6) Students should also acquire a copy of Amira Wegenek and William Buskist's (2010) The Insider's Guide to the Psychology Major: Everything You Need to Know about the Degree and Profession, published by the American Psychological Association.
