Explain why a teacher needs to teach students how to talk about texts and describe how this can be implemented into the classroom
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Many students arrive at school without knowing what a real conversation—deep reflective talk—is like. Teachers have an obligation to model, scaffold, and use direct instruction within the classroom to engage students in deep reflective conversations about books. Students need the opportunity to practice the use of cognitive strategies in order to internalize them and strengthen comprehension. Students who engage in conversations in the classroom become intellectually engaged with the text. Engaging students in conversation through literature discussion groups using self-selected books is an effective activity for promoting text talk.
