A multifactorial design, which involves the manipulation of two or more variables, can be both an efficient and economical way of conducting research. Instead of conducting two separate studies, the researcher only conducts one study. Most importantly, a multifactorial design allows for the test of the simultaneous influence of each independent variable on the dependent variable; multifactorial designs allow researchers to learn whether the influence of one independent variable depends on the level of the other independent variable (i.e., it tests for an interaction).
