What are the four barriers to effective listening and what are the causes of these barriers? What can a
speaker do to limit the effect of poor listening?
What will be an ideal response?
Listener distractions, caused by the capacity to think faster than we can listen. Situational
distractions, caused by outside interference or noise. Limited attention span, caused by exposure to short,
simple messages. Jumping to conclusions, caused by assumptions and assimilation. According to my
book, "a well-prepared, well-delivered speech is the best defense against listener distractions."
