If life evolved in hydrothermal vents, is it likely the first cells were in the Domain Archaea?
What will be an ideal response?
Not necessarily. Organisms found in hydrothermal vents are closely related to modern organisms that
do not live in hydrothermal vents. Archaea are more closely related to Eukarya than Bacteria are to
Eukarya. While the name Archaea suggests they are “ancient”, the evidence does not suggest they are
more ancient than Bacteria.
