One system of categorizing emotions focuses on their valence and activity. For example, excitement might be considered an active-positive emotion. Classify the following emotions according to valence and activity and justify your choices: relief, envy, terror, and joy.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary but should be justifiable based on student reasoning. Relief is likely to be a passive-positive emotion; it is most likely the result of actions not taken by the person experiencing the emotion. Envy is might be a passive-negative emotion (although an argument could be made for active-negative), because it is usually the result of others’ actions or behaviors. Terror is probably an active-negative emotion because it encourages the person experiencing it to take action, such as fleeing or hiding. Joy is an active-positive emotion; imagine the phrases “jumping for joy” and “bursting with joy” and the action attendant on joy becomes apparent.
