First, there is a correlation between ethnic identity salience and oppression. Groups that are oppressed because of their ethnicity or culture evidence high ethnic identity because their ethnocultural heritage is the source of prejudice, discrimination, and oppression. Second, where an ethnic group stands on the continuum of immigrant-to-acculturation-to-assimilation is another factor that affects a person’s ethnic identity. White Americans have lived in this country for at least two to four generations; therefore, they are far along on the continuum of assimilation. A third factor affecting the ethnic identity of White Americans is that a new, superordinate identity has emerged that is more powerful than the individual ethnic identities (i.e., whether one is Irish, German, Italian, etc.). This superordinate identity has been labeled “Whiteness” and the set of privileges that Whiteness brings to its members.
